RARE AJOITE and SHATTUCKITE - 43 carats/42 x 20 mm - AJO, ARIZONA 23774RARE LARGE AJOITE and SHATTUCKITE - 43 carats / 42 x 20 mm - AJO, ARIZONA
This large cabochon is a freeform oval with excellent doming and luster. The back is finished with a semi polish.
This is a lovely and rare cabochon of blue green ajoite and deep blue shattuckite. Both the ajoite and shattuckite have a very unique color and structure. At Ajo these rare minerals were mostly found in a silicified state (quartz intrusions) which left them hard and excellent for gemstone cutting. This material was mined out decades ago and the mine at Ajo was closed in the 1980's.
Ajoite and shattuckite are rare, and together with the quartz, all three elements of this cabochon are considered to have metaphysical attributes.
In the closeup photo you can see the unique crystalline structure of the rare minerals. Even more so in person with a hand loupe.
The stone comes from an old stock of rough from the New Cornelia Mine in Ajo, Arizona, cut and polished in smalltown Arizona.
